Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملObservational Evidence for Galaxy Evolution in the Local Group
This review aims to give a summary of our understanding of galaxy evolution as infered from studies of nearby galaxies; how observations made with the Hubble Space Telescope have contributed significantly to our detailed understanding of the older stellar populations in Local Group dwarf galaxies. Recent results from VLT are also promising interesting future prospects for the study of resolved ...
متن کاملLocal redshift surveys and galaxy evolution
We present observations of galaxy environmental dependencies using data from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. From a combined analysis of the luminosity function, Butcher-Oemler effect and trends in Hα line strengths we find support for a model where galaxy properties are mainly set by initial conditions at the time of their formation.
متن کاملAntlia: an Outskirt Local Group Galaxy
Deep (I,V-I) and (I,B-I) color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the Antlia dwarf galaxy, based on Science Verification (SV) data collected with the FORS I camera on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) are presented. By adopting the new calibration of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) provided by Salaris & Cassisi (1998) we estimated that the Antlia distance modulus is (m-M)0=25.98 ±0.10 mag. We...
متن کاملGalaxy & Cluster Biasing from Local Group Dynamics
Comparing the gravitational acceleration induced on the Local Group of galaxies by different tracers of the underline density field we estimate, within the linear gravitational instability theory and the linear biasing ansatz, their relative bias factors. Using optical SSRS2 galaxies, IRAS (PSCz) galaxies and Abell/ACO clusters, we find bO,I ≈ 1.21 ± 0.06 and bC,I ≈ 4.3 ± 0.8, in agreement with...
